SFU SENATE RUNNER UP
This Spring semester, I hope to bring excitement, innovation, and opportunities if elected on Senate.
Through collaborating with the school administrators, I plan on hosting food contests such as an instant noodle free for all, and a massive Free FOOD sampling event! Like anybody else, I know the importance of a balanced budget. By consistently reaching out to the community, I hope to raise funds and awareness of the changes happening at SFU. Furthermore, special seasonal sales on ice cream, jello, and coconuts will be held to further raise revenue.
Dances, and late night events will also be held but I will look for improvement to ensure that each event is successful. In case anyone wishes to know about my qualifications, I have been student council president, vice president, and grade representative for a total of 5 years. I have experience independently designing and overseeing large events such as carnivals with over 1000 students. In addition, I was also the vice president of Free the Children- an international student lead organization to raise funds for developing countries. With my expertise in advertising, fundraising, and organizing, you can count on me for any event! Outside of school, I have also been an active volunteer for the Vision Vancouver Party during the 2015 elections, along with volunteering as a computer teacher for Chief Maquinna elementary's summer school program.
One of the greatest challenges university students face is the lack of sleep. By reintroducing an old idea brought up by senate in the previous years, my goal is to use the generated revenue from community funds, and sales towards renovating old SFU facilities into sleeping centres. The facility's design will consist of small bedrooms each with a door that can be unlocked from the inside or by security. In this way, I hope that individuals will not have to worry about privacy and relax before writing a big midterm or final.
Like I mentioned before, one of my goals is to engage the community in new ways. In another perspective, I also wish to engage our students through opportunities with the public.By connecting with recognized leaders and companies in Vancouver, and Burnaby I wish to provide SFU students will a CHANCE to apply themselves and their skills in the real world. There will be volunteering, potential job opportunities, and community events which I encourage our students to try.
As Barack Obama says " Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we have been waiting for. We are the Change that we seek." Together "YES WE CAN!!!", And I promise to all of you the same, "TOGETHER YES WE CAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!". Thank you, and from Feb 15-18 Vote David Cao Shen as your Senate Rep!

Hobbies, Leisure, Summer!
Blueberry picking in Richmond!
Well guys, summer is almost coming to an end, I must say I had a very challenging but fabulous summer break. The weather has been very gorgeous! I took Chemistry Completion for summer school this year, although there was somewhat more work than regular school, I loved the pace of it, the teacher was also very good!
Like previous years I spent some time volunteering at the Frogs in the Park Program held by Frog Hollow. Being able to help young children grow, learn, and develop new skills makes me happy. My baby cousins, and sister also attended this program therefore I wanted to be apart of their learning experience! I had a lot fun, although it was very sunny, and hot. As much as I love running around playing tag, building sand castles, and cooking fake food with the little kids. To be honest I believe the best part about volunteering is being able to make a difference in your community. I'm very pleased and thankful to see so many new young volunteers helping out around our community, the contributions families, and volunteers make are truly influential.
Blueberry and strawberry picking in Richmond was pretty fun, my family and I went this august. The thing I love most about Richmond are the airplanes that fly by every 5 minutes or so. It just such a spectacular sight. We went at 6 pm when the sun was still in the sky, but not as hot. My mom kept complaining about the mosquitos, but I had no problems, none of them bit me but my mom was less fortunate. The scenery of the sunset on the field on berries was beautiful. I haven't seen something so beautiful in a long time, in Vancouver during the school year I just study, I got to go out more often and enjoy the gifts of nature. Maybe I'll camp or go fishing for the last couple days of summer.
I've also wanted some good sushi at home, and this summer I had the chance to do exactly that. My siblings and I wanted to be environmentally friendly so we walked about 30 blocks to get the ingredients we needed. Sounds kind of silly but it wasn't actually that bad. I went online and learned about Japanese food, the sushi rolls in particular. I found out that they weren't that hard to make. It just takes some practice, and after that your good to go. Although my rolls may not be the most professional, but to me what makes something delicious is that someone put their heart, time, and effort into making something. So now that I've completed my goal of making sushi, next time I want to learn how to make some dimsum.

When it's time to sit down and turn on the T.V I love watching Chinese Dramas. And now is the right timing because the new Triumphs in the Skies II is out :D, awesome for me haha! The scenery filmed in the drama are fabulous, I especially love the background music used in this drama, they are very special indeed. I would have liked this series even more if there were more ups and downs though so I'd give it an 8.5/10. At the moment I am waiting and waiting for On Call 36 Hours II to come out ):!! The first series was awesome!!!
I'm still working at Superstore, but earlier in August I discovered that the Vancouver Public Library was hiring Shelvers! Although I like my job very much at the moment, I decided to take the risk. I sent the manager my resume and cover letter, and just so they could remember me I also included a picture of myself on the side! Anyways, later I received an email inviting me to go the the Central branch for a shelving test. I actually spent about 2 days studying about the library at home and at one of the public libraries. It was kind of funny because I kept asking questions, and it was not until the point at which I was asked by the librarian " are you studying for the shelving test?" I was a little embarrassed, but yes I was. The libraries were nice, they taught me all about the library, and I learned a lot. After arriving in front of the testing room I noticed there were a lot of people who were going to write the test. There students like me or perhaps in university, or college. I also noticed older people probably in the ages of 30 to 40 also writing, although they might have more experience and knowledge, I wasn't ready to give up just yet. Keep calm and act like student council is one of my favourite motto, and so I did and wrote the test. I cannot tell you what was on it, but it is a timed test you will have to study for.
Out of all the amazing things I did this summer, I am very proud to say I now have my Learners License for driving, next summer I will be getting my Novice License, then when I'm in grade 12 I can drive to work and school! But I still feel biking is better than driving, maybe I'll try to drive less...

One of my most recent activity is collecting donations for Free the Children. While I attend school I enjoy spending my lunch going around and asking students for donation towards Free the Children. After 1 week of hard work my friends and I have successfully collected $28.12, which is enough for 1 person in Africa to live their whole life drinking clean, clear drinkable water!!!
